Here is the guidelines for Social Media Influencers in India
To prevent the consumers from being mislead by the advertisements and improper disclosures, Centre brings upon necessary guidelines
Today’s day and age revolve a lot around Social Media. Be it Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and tons of other Social Media apps, with this we have witnessed the rise of Influencer culture where Social Media have become capable enough to set trends or influence the public. To be precise, these influencers have made a concrete follower base.
Considering the impact of Social Media on the public, the Centre on the 20th of January, 2023 releases the endorsement guidelines for celebrities and Social Media Influencers. The Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution released a guide ‘Endorsements Know-hows!’ for celebrities, influencers and virtual influencers on social media platforms.’
The guidelines have been released by PIB, Press Information Bureau is the nodal agency of the Government of India to disseminate information to the print and electronic media on government policies, programmes, initiatives and achievements. Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary Department of Consumer Affairs released the “Endorsement Know-hows!”
The guide has been released in response to the growing use of digital media and several of the products that are being endorsed by various social media influencers. Many times, those advertisements end up being misleading to consumers.
Centre tries to highlight that disclosures and endorsements should be done in a way that makes it almost hard to miss for the consumers. The Department of Consumer Affairs released a certain set of guidelines on the 9th of June, 2022 in response to the increased number of misleading advertisements and these guidelines are an extension of that.
