SMS Two Factor Authentication feature exclusively for Twitter Blue tick subscribers
An id and password are two of the important elements of any social media platform account where you sign in. But when it comes to Twitter it is always suggested to have two-factor authentication because Twitter is no doubt a sensitive domain where opinions do have the power to direct decisions.
Earlier users could secure their Twitter account using three methods of two-factor authentication: text message, authentication app, and security app. But after 20 March 2023, Twitter will no longer allow non-Twitter blue subscribers to use text messages as a 2FA method.
This means non-Twitter blue subscribers won’t be allowed to use the most used authentication method which is SMS based method. To support this move Twitter in its blog has written “While historically a popular form of 2FA, unfortunately, we have seen phone numbers based on 2FA be used and abused by bad actors.
So starting today, we will no longer allow accounts to enroll in the text message/SMS method of 2FA unless they are Twitter Blue subscribers. The availability of the text message 2FA for Twitter Blue may vary by country and carrier”.
Twitter further wrote in its blog “Non-Twitter Blue subscribers that are already enrolled will have 30 days to disable this method and enroll in another”. So users will have to rely on authentication apps or on security keys instead that are not considered as reliable as SMS two-factor authentication methods.
