Finally, you might be free of the WhatsApp family party forwards-by deleting WhatsApp.
Encrypted instant messaging service Signal is reporting a spike in new signups and new customers as users of WhatsApp switch databases. Signal, an instant messaging app created by the non-profit Signal Foundation, is a competitor to Facebook-owned instant messaging applications, including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Some social media users have also claimed that Signal has become Google Playstore’s top grossing app on Sunday.
The change in the nation’s chat app priorities came after the latest WhatsApp Privacy Policies and Terms of Service made it clear that none of the customer data was already sharing with Facebook’s other applications and services.
But though WhatsApp has become part of India’s daily vocabulary, a sudden exodus to a new app may leave users nervous and worried. To make the shift easier, desi users on Twitter have made memes bring a bit of fun to the very sordid affair, particularly for devoted WhatsApp users who are now jumping on a ship to save their info.
Although many of the latest words have already been established, WhatsApp now spells out explicitly that user data is and will continue to be shared with Facebook and other Facebook products as well as services. WhatsApp also says that it tracks user location data at all times, and even if you’re smart enough to turn off WhatsApp location access on your Android phone or Apple iPhone, the app still collects and logs IP addresses and phone number codes to estimate your overall location—WhatsApp says this is for diagnostics and troubleshooting.
Apple, after releasing the latest Privacy Marks on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac App Store, now mandates app creators to explicitly specify what user data they receive or do not collect from consumers. The App Store Privacy Labels will have three sections—data used to track you, data linked to you, and data not linked to you. Each section will include bullet points detailing the exact details of the data being collected, including contact information, health and wellness data, financial information, user data, browser history, location data, personal identifiers, and search history. With this information accessible at a glance, a person will theoretically make a more educated decision as to whether to use a certain program on the iPhone or iPad, or Mac without slipping through the data gathering and privacy black hole that has become the standard over the years.
Subsequent disclosures reveal that WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger gather substantially more customer data than competing instant messenger applications like Signal and Apple’s own iMessage. This includes health and wellness data, financial records, history of searches, user material, history of surfing, and location data. The Signal software does not gather any user data as per the Privacy Labels of the App Store.
Telegram Messenger, which is trying to take the advantage of the present situation also added funny stuff in their post:
“We have seen a giant spike in India since the WhatsApp news and also with Elon Musk’s recent tweet,” Jun Harada, head of growth and communication at Signal, told ET. “We do hope to have much more growth in India in the near future. We saw a very large spike over summer in India and have seen it only continue to grow.”
