Whatsapp rolls out a new feature “Protect IP address in calls” for both iOS and Android devices
Whatsapp has always focused on its security features in order to ensure the safety and privacy of the users’ data. Whether it’s hiding your last seen, status privacy, silencing unknown callers, who can add you to groups, reach out to you, or the recently introduced Chat lock feature, all these features add an extra layer of security for WhatsApp users. Previously it was reported that a new feature “Protect IP address in calls” will also be rolled out soon on WhatsApp.
Well, the feature now officially arrives for both iOS and Android devices running on the latest version of WhatsApp. This feature will help make calls on WhatsApp more secure as it hides your location from other parties on the call.
As per the blog post, “Most calling products people use today have peer-to-peer connections between participants. This direct connection allows for faster data transfers and better call quality, but it also means that participants need to know each other’s IP addresses so that call data packets can be delivered to the correct device – meaning that the IP addresses are visible to both callers on a 1:1 call. IP addresses may contain information that some of our most privacy-conscious users are mindful of, such as broad geographical location or internet provider.”
For this concern, Whatsapp now allows its users to protect their IP address during calls, with this feature all your calls will be relayed through Whatsapp servers ensuring that the other parties in the call cannot see your IP address. This feature protects the users from potential cyber attacks adding an extra layer of security during calls.
How to enable “Protect IP address in calls” on WhatsApp?
Make sure that you have installed the latest version of WhatsApp on your device and then follow the following steps-
- Tap Settings
- Go to Privacy
- Select Advanced
- Tap Protect IP address in calls
