Samsung to launch it’s own AI accelerator chip- Mach 1 by early next year

The South Korean tech giant Samsung is all set to launch it’s own self-developed artificial intelligence accelerator for the first time. Till now the AI semiconductor market is dominated by Nvidia but seems like now Samsung has decided to enter the semiconductor market as a competitor to Nvidia with it’s own AI accelerator chip called Mach 1.

As per President Kyeong-Hyeon Gyeonghyun, in charge of Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor division, “ Technical verification for Mach-1 has been completed through programmable chip (FPGA) and system-on-chip (SoC) design is in progress. We will produce the chip by the end of the year and see the AI system made with our chip early next year.”

Mach-1 is said to be an accelerator suitable for AI inference processes and is expected to be a lightweight AI chip that can utilize low power memory without the expensive high-bandwidth memory used in AI semiconductors. Currently, the problem with AI inferencing is said that there is a bottleneck between the data transfer between GPU, CPU and the memory. Mach-1 is expected to reduce this ongoing problem of data transfer speed bottleneck to 1/8th of current levels.

Stay tuned with us to get all the latest updates regarding Samsung’s AI accelerator chip, Mach-1.
