Samsung presents industry’s first LPDDR5X DRAM, enabling high performance of up to 10.7 gigabits-per-second performance
– Mass production to begin in second half of 2024
In this world where we seek faster, seamless performance in our productivity gadgets, imagine a performance speed of about 10.7 gigabits per second. Although it might sound unimaginable to some of you, Samsung Electronics is bringing the same to the industry. The pioneer brand in the world of advanced memory technology has now announced that they have developed the world’s first LPDDR5X DRAM.
The announcement which came today, 17 April 2024, reports that Samsung’s chip size is the smallest among existing LPDDRs. The chip uses 12 nanometers (nm) – class process technology.
YongCheol Bae, Executive Vice President of Memory Product Planning of the Memory Business at Samsung Electronics expressed that the LPDDR5X DRAM is expected to expand its applications to mobiles, PCs, accelerators, servers, and automobiles. He further asserted that the brand will continue its efforts to innovate and deliver optimized products for the future on-device AI era.
In the present times, with the incorporation of AI in applications and on-device AI, which holds the capability of direct processing on devices, the need of the hour is low-power, high-performance LPDDR memory.
In comparison to the previous generation, Samsung’s 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X has the potential to improve performance by more than 25% and capacity by more than 30%. Along with it, it expands the single package capacity of mobile DRAM up to 32 GB.
Samsung has incorporated specialized power-saving technologies in the LPDDR5X. This includes the likes of optimized power variation, expanded low-power mode intervals, etc.
The enhanced and improved power efficiency will also enable long battery life for mobile devices. Moreover, a user can also decrease their total cost of ownership (TOC), as a result of a decrease in energy usage while data processing.
Samsung will begin mass production of the 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X by the second half of 2024. Subsequently, the brand will carry on verification with mobile application processors (AP) and mobile device providers.
