SpaceX to Assist NASA in the Dragonfly Mission to Titan
The Dragonfly is considered to be the fourth mission under NASA’s New Frontiers Program managed by its Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. As mentioned, the mission that centers around the novel approach of planetary exploration aims to send a nuclear-powered rotorcraft lander to Saturn’s largest moon – Titan (second largest moon of the solar system after Jupiter’s Ganymede).
Collecting sample materials, determining the surface composition of Titan in different geological settings, exploring habitability in Titan’s environment, investigating progression of prebiotic chemistry on Titan, and searching for traces of life (water-based or hydrocarbon-based) are some of the key objectives to be fulfilled.
SpaceX has received the firm-fixed contract amounting to USD 256.6 million and the company is to provide all the launch services and mission-related support for NASA. It is assigned to launch the rotorcraft on the SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket from the Launch Complex 39A of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, in Florida. The targeted launch time frame is from the 5th of July 2025 to the 25th of July 2025 (three-week window).
Just to add, the Falcon Heavy Rocket of SpaceX is said to be the second most powerful rocket after NASA’s Space Launch System Moon Rocket (in operation as of now). However, the Starship Megarocket of SpaceX is expected to claim the title of ‘the most powerful rocket’ currently in operation soon.
