HMD Unveils OffGrid Satellite gadget: 24/7 Emergency Response, Live Location Tracking at $199

Satellite communication is growing in the mobile industry. Following Apple’s SOS service and Xiaomi’s planned satellite features for its upcoming 15 Ultra, HMD has now launched the OffGrid at CES 2025. This satellite accessory, similar to Motorola Defy Satellite Link, works across 70% of Earth’s landmass that lacks mobile network coverage.

HMD Offgrid uses L Band satellite radio to connect Android and iPhone users to satellites in remote areas. At 60g, it allows users to send messages and share locations with up to five contacts through its app. Messages are sent from the user’s phone number, eliminating recipients needing to download any additional apps. The device includes a dedicated button for real-time GPS location sharing via a shared link and a ‘check-in’ feature for sending pre-set messages to contacts.

“HMD OffGrid is a new, affordable, portable and easy-to-use offering that’s both empowering and reliable – especially when it matters the most. We’re proud to continue innovating products that prioritise human connection whilst still allowing people to switch-off. So, whether you’re hiking in the mountains or skiing off-piste, HMD OffGrid ensures you’re never truly off grid,” said Jean-Francis Baril, Co-founder, Chairman and CEO, at Human Mobile Devices.

The device features Overwatch x Rescueâ„¢, FocusPoint International’s emergency service with multilingual support. Greg Pearson, Founder, and Chief Executive Officer at FocusPoint International, says, “Together with Human Mobile Devices (HMD), our hope is to expand the possibilities for exploration whilst prioritising safety for all. We have proven experience and direct access to the global search and rescue network providing peace of mind to anyone adventuring beyond traditional mobile network coverage.”

HMD OffGrid offers a three-day battery life and meets MIL-STD-810H military durability standards. Setup requires scanning a QR code to activate the subscription and app.
