After the prime minister and three other cabinet members elected not to isolate after being exposed to the coronavirus, Finland’s government is losing credibility.
Prime Minister Sanna Marin apologised earlier this week for not cutting short her Saturday night out after learning that a minister she had contact with had tested positive for the virus. Her blunder drew condemnation from the opposition and press, as well as memes and backlash on social media.
Marin, 36, was seen in a video drinking a Corona-branded beer at a nightclub. Marin claimed she couldn’t recall the beer she was drinking. Butchers is a club in Helsinki’s party district that bills itself as an international sanctuary inspired by New York’s Meatpacking District.
According to local media reports, she wasn’t the only one who disobeyed the government’s internal Covid social distancing standards, raising questions about the cabinet’s ability to impose restrictions on citizens and oversee attempts to combat the pandemic.
After criticising Marin’s behaviour, Economy Minister Mika Lintila apologised after it was revealed that he had attended an indoor sporting event knowing he had been exposed. After getting instructions to isolate after coming into contact with the virus at a Friday cabinet meeting, Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen went to a banquet supper and Trade Minister Ville Skinnari proceeded to play ice hockey.

To ensure the cabinet’s ability to lead the country, the government’s internal norms are stricter than Finland’s official policy.
The erosion of moral authority by the ministers coincides with the spread of illnesses. Since the end of October, the demand on hospitals’ intensive care units has more than doubled. Furthermore, the government may soon be forced to take over the management of pandemic preparedness measures currently handled by regional governments.
