After tensions over Christmas, Centre freezes the accounts of Mother Teresa’s charity

All bank accounts of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa have been frozen by the Centre. After weekend protests over Christmas celebrations, Mamta Banerjee claimed it on Monday.

Christmas mass was disrupted in parts of India, including in Modi’s core territory. Modi’s party has repeatedly accused the MoC of running religious conversion scheme under the guise of charity, offering poor Hindus and tribal communities money, free education, and shelter.
Mamta Banerjee also tweeted saying, “Shocked to hear that (at) Christmas, Union Ministry FROZE ALL BANK ACCOUNTS of Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in India!”
She also added, “Their 22,000 patients & employees have been left without food & medicines. While the law is paramount, humanitarian efforts must not be compromised.”

The Missionaries of Charity were founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa, a Roman Catholic nun who died in 1997. The MoC has more than 3,000 nuns in its eastern state of West Bengal who work in hospices, schools, leper colonies, and homes for abandoned children.
