PV Sindhu enters Syed Modi International semis
The two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu rallied from a sport all the way down to defeat Thailand’s Supanida Katething and advance to the semifinals of the Syed Modi International Super 300 event right here on Friday.
In a match lasting one hour and five minutes, the Indian defeated her Thai opponent, seeded sixth in the event, 11-21, 21-12, 21-17.
Within the semifinals, Sindhu will play fifth-seeded Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya.
HS Prannoy, however, was eliminated from the boys’ singles event with a straight-game defeat to Arnaud Merkle of France in the quarterfinals.
After 59 minutes of play, India’s fifth-seeded opponent, a former high 10 participant, lost 19-21, 16-21 to the French.
The quarterfinal match between Mithun Manjunath and Sergey Sirant lasted one hour and one minute. Mithun Manjunath, however, advanced to the semifinals, winning 11-21, 21-12, 21-18.
The semifinals will feature Manjunath and Merkle.
In the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles contest, MR Arjun and Treesa Jolly defeated the eighth seeded French team of William Villeger and Anne Tran 24-22, 21-17 in 42 minutes.
Within the semifinals, Arjun and Jolly will play compatriots Tanisha Crasto and Ishaan Bhatnagar, seeded seventh.
The eighth seeded Malaysian pair of Anna Ching Yik Cheong and Teoh Mei Xing won their quarterfinal match by walkover against India’s Ramya Venkatesh Chickmenahalli and Apeksha Nayak.
