The popularity of vegan food has been slowly gaining momentum in India. Over the last few years, not only have people started to appreciate the concept of veganism but have adopted it in their lives too. According to a UN FAO report, India has the lowest rate of meat consumption in the world due to 44 per cent of the 1.3 billion population being Hindus. According to rough estimates, there were around 500 million vegetarians in India in 2020 and of these, only one per cent are strict vegans. So, the total number of vegans in India is around five million. The increase in the number and opportunities for interaction of vegan influencers.

The savvy younger generation has proven to be a critical factor in the rise of veganism in India. Many Bollywood and cricket stars regularly advocate veganism and follow a 100% plant-based diet, which ultimately expands their sphere of influence. Veganism is defined as a way of living that attempts to exclude all forms of animals exploitation and cruelty, whether for food, clothing or any other purpose. India’s vegan food is expected to increase by 2021, according to surveys, as people notice many health benefits such as lower cholesterol levels in the body, weight loss, lifestyle changes, etc.

India’s food movement may be a symbol of the global fight against Covid-19. India has the potential for moral leadership in many areas; the continuation of global vegetarianism/veganism is one of them. With the rapid growth of veganism around the world, India, as a young country with almost half of its population under thirty, is keen to follow this trend and help this sector to grow.
