IPL 2022: Simon Katich, SRH Assistant Coach, Resigns Days After Mega Auction, Here’s Why
Simon Katich, a former Australian cricketer and SRH assistant coach, is said to have resigned days after the blockbuster auction.
Simon Katich, a former Australian cricketer and the assistant coach of IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), is said to have resigned just days after the big auction. According to News Corp, the former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) head coach left SRH because he not only disagreed with how the franchise was run, but also believed that the pre-auction arrangements were not followed during the two-day event in Bengaluru.
Why are Australians abandoning SRH?
After fellow countrymen Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin opted to leave their coaching jobs, Simon Katich was named the assistant coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad late last year. Following the resignations of Bayliss and Haddin, SRH’s Director of Cricket, Tom Moody, was compelled to step back into the job of head coach. Moddy then hired Katich as his assistant and entered the mega auction for the IPL 2022 season.
However, in a startling turn of events, Katich has also parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Katich’s resignation comes after the controversial dismissal of SRH captain David Warner earlier this year. Due to the team’s dismal performance in the first phase of the IPL 2021, Warner was fired as captain. At the time, Moody stated that the decision was taken with the team’s balance in mind, and that Warner understood the reasoning.
The previous season, Sunrisers Hyderabad finished at the bottom of the standings, prompting the management to make a full rebuild of the team. Warner was removed from the squad, leaving SRH with only Kane Williamson and two uncapped Indian players in Abdul Samad and Umran Malik to compete in the auction. During the IPL 2022 super auction, the SRH team owner’s daughter was spotted calling the shots at the table, while Moody and Katich sat on the sidelines as observers.
