Manchester United’s poor season continued as Everton improved their Premier League survival chances with a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
After Manchester United’s defeat at Everton, police are investigating an incident in which Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly swatted a phone out of a supporter’s hand as he walked off the field.
“As players were leaving the pitch at 2:30 p.m., it was reported that a boy was assaulted by one of the away team as they left the pitch,” Merseyside Police said Sunday. “Inquiries are underway and officers are currently working with Everton Football Club to review CCTV (video) footage and are carrying out extensive witness enquiries to establish if an offence has taken place.”
“It’s never simple to deal with emotions in difficult circumstances like the one we’re in,” Ronaldo added.
“It’s never simple to deal with emotions in challenging situations like this one. Nonetheless, we must always be respectful, patient, and set an example for all the young people who are passionate about the beautiful game,” Ronaldo stated on Instagram.
“I apologise for my reaction and, if feasible, I’d want to invite this fan to see a game at Old Trafford as a gesture of fairness and sportsmanship.”
Ronaldo was recorded hitting a phone out of his path as he struggled past supporters trying to film Manchester United players in footage that has gone popular on social media. Manchester United is investigating an incident, according to Sky Sports News.
Coming to the game, Manchester United’s bad luck continued as Everton strengthened their Premier League survival chances with a 1-0 victory at Goodison Park.
United was aiming for a win in any cup tournament to bring them level on points with Tottenham Hotspur, who were in fourth place.
But their task was made even more difficult when Everton took the lead in the first half thanks to Anthony Gordon.
The nervousness showed for the Toffees, who are just above the relegation zone, after the break, but despite a plethora of attacking options on the pitch, the visitors lacked the talent to get back into the game.
United came within a whisker of tying the game with a late Cristiano Ronaldo goal, but the team with the most English top-flight titles ever fell to seventh place, three points behind Spurs, who play Aston Villa later on Saturday.
Everton hung on for a crucial win at the death, pulling four points clear of 18th-placed Burnley, who travel to Norwich City on Sunday.
United goalkeeper David de Gea told Sky Sports, “We don’t score, we don’t even create decent chances to score.” “To be honest, I’m at a loss for words.”
