After Friday prayers, protests erupted in numerous locations across the state over now-suspended BJP lawmaker Nupur Sharma’s controversial recent remarks about Prophet Mohammad.
Sloganeering was reported in Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur, and Lucknow, according to a senior official at the Uttar Pradesh Police headquarters in Lucknow.
After the Friday prayers in Prayagraj’s Atala neighbourhood, people chanted slogans and threw stones. To maintain peace and order, a large police force was deployed in the region. Senior police and government officials have also arrived on the scene.
“The reports of stone-pelting in Prayagraj are being investigated,” stated Parashant Kumar, Additional Director General (Law and Order). In most parts of the state, he claimed, Friday prayers were held peacefully.
This follows confrontations in Kanpur last week over statements made about the Prophet during a TV debate a few days earlier. Following that, a high alert was established across the state, and a large police force was dispatched to ensure that violence did not recur.
