Cybercriminals are attaining new ways of attack by impersonating popular crypto platforms like Binance, Celo, and Trust Wallets. They are deceptively creating fake e-mails and login pages to steal login details and virtual funds of the users to their domain.
Proofpoint said in their new report, “As cryptocurrency and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) becoming more mainstream, and capturing headlines for their volatility, there is a greater likelihood of more individuals falling victim to fraud attempting to exploit people for digital currencies.”
Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team has recently caught threat actors targeting valuable cryptocurrency data. The research team has also spread awareness about a recent threat, Cryware which steals information. It collects valuable data from cryptocurrency wallets named hot wallets by getting access to private keys, seed phrases, and wallet addresses.
The Web3 provides a landscape for ice phishing campaigns by targeting the Blockchains of decentralized databases functioning as a storage unit for cryptocurrency transactions. Microsoft 365 Defender Research Team has detected that this type of cybercriminal activity is conducted by means of spam emails. These emails basically contain rough URLs that can download malware. When these URLs are clicked they may look like a genuine version of the NFT landing page or trading platforms such as OpenSea.
Blockchain analytics firm has stated that Cryptocurrency based crimes are at a record high in 2021. according to the numerics only in 2021 cybercriminals has received $14 billion while in 2020 there were only $7.8 billion discrepancies.
