AI to take charge of offside decisions in FIFA World Cup
The most disappointing part in football is that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) takes too long, which breaks the flow of the match. In some cases, according to FIFA, the VAR has taken up to four minutes as well for offside decisions. Now, a technology has been proposed that promises to reduce that time to just three or four seconds.
An artificial intelligence based technology, is likely to be deployed in the FIFA World Cup later this year in Qatar, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), who is responsible for the rules formation, has indicated now.
“It looks very good and very promising, our experts are looking into (the trials) before we take a decision on whether it will be used for the World Cup or not”, FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.
The technology will be connected with the ball making it an automatic ball detection, it will create 3D models of a player in real time. However, the final word will be in the hands of on – field officials and the technology will just play as an extra helping hand, Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s chief refereeing officer.
This decision will surely save time of the games and will not keep players and fans hooked up to a decision. The technology will be implemented from the 2023 – 24 season with youth games in Holland, Italy and Sweden.
