Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old American black man from Akron, was shot and killed by police last week in Ohio. In a recent video of the incident, it has been reported that he had been wounded by a number of bullets.

In Akron, where officers tried to stop him for a traffic violation, the 25-year-old was being chased by police early on Monday morning. Police were given a somewhat protracted chase across the city by Walker after he refused to stop. A number of units were called for assistance.

As per Akron Police, when they chased Walker, they heard gunshots from his car, and they claim security camera footage from the vicinity shows a muzzle flare coming from inside. This led the police to assume Walker was armed, which they reported to dispatch.

Walker eventually stopped and fled on foot while wearing a ski mask, despite authorities’ orders for him to stop and turn himself in. They claim they attempted to use Tasers on him but were ineffective.

Walker kept running, but eventually he stopped to turn back. Several officers then started shooting at him, murdering him. The ME claims that he was struck at least 60 times in total.

Police claim that once they stopped fire, they attempted to save Walker’s life, but he eventually died. He was ultimately found to be without weapons there on the ground, but police claim a subsequent search of his vehicle revealed a revolver with a loaded magazine.

Eight police officers who took part in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while an inquiry is conducted. For over a week now, protests have been taking place in Akron, demanding for justice for his murder. In addition to an internal investigation into this, the DOJ claims to be looking into it as well.

Following the shooting, the city of Akron decided to postpone this weekend’s Fourth of July fireworks show. LeBron James — who’s famously from Akron — tweeted Sunday, “I pray for my city.”
