Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute(AARI) is the oldest and largest Russian research institute in the field of studying comprehensive studies of the Arctic and Antarctica and is located in Saint Petersburg. They have got numerous departments starting from oceanography, glaciology, meteorology, hydrology or Arctic river mouths and water resources, geophysics, polar geography, and others. Throughout its history, the AARI has organized more than a thousand Arctic expeditions, which includes dozens of high-altitude aerial expeditions, which even transported manned drifting ice stations to the Central Arctic. In the coming next years AARI is expecting the North Pole polar drifting research platform, which can perform continuing studies in the Arctic Ocean.
Even today AARI continues to ravel the secrets of our planet in the Arctic and Antarctic as a state scientific centre. The institute is a full-cycle organisation where the employees do everything starting from obtaining data from the observatories and conducting exploratory, fundamental, expeditionary research to data processing, mapping and forecasts. The most important applied task in the Arctic is ensuring safe navigation along the Northern Sea Route. But recently, in the midst of the Russian-Ukraine war, there was news reporting stating AARI is pwned and their data is breached. This is not the first time any institute is facing data breaches. Earlier too companies like yahoo, First American Financial Corp, Facebook, Linkedin, and many more have faced breaching of private sensitive data. The rising trend in data breaches continues to angle upwards, and as a result, there was never been a more precarious time in history to launch and maintain a successful business. There is a simple M’s tool which is flooding Russian websites with fake web traffic, an old and basic cyberattck more commonly known as a distributed denial of service or DDoS. The DDoS attck has been a regeneration during the opening weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Even President Joe Biden has warned of “the evolving intelligence that the Russian Government is exploring options for the potential cyberattacks.” Even Shane Huntley, the head of Google’s Threat Analysis Group stated that the DDoS attacks are appealing to many novice hackers because of widely available programs that make them easy to deploy. The Russian embassy even tweeted that they have received around 200 cyber attacks everyday.
