Serena Williams retires from tennis
American tennis star Serena Williams is all set to say a final goodbye to the sport. The 40 year old announced this decision to retire in the September edition of Vogue magazine on Tuesday.
Williams is 23 time Grand Slam champion, and she is set to play her last game at the US Open, starting from August 29.
Moreover, she is the winner of six US Open titles; (1999, 2002, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014), the joint-most with Chris Evert in the Open Era. Her first Grand Slam win was also a US Open, which was way back in 1999. Williams has a win-loss record of 106-14 at the US Open.
Williams is the only woman to have recorded more than 65 wins across all four Slams. Australia Open: 92-13, French Open: 69-14, Wimbledon: 98-14, and US Open: 106-14. These records will be extreme difficult to break in the near future.
Serena has appeared in 10 US Open finals, and has won six of them. Meanwhile, the American has reached the semi final 14 times in the tournament.
Some records under the name Serena Williams:
- Williams is the only player in tennis history to win three of the four majors six times (US Open, Australian Open, Wimbledon).
- She is only the third player to achieve a Career Grand Slam in singles and doubles (along with sister Venus Williams) after Margaret Court and Martina Navratilova.
- Williams has spent a total of 186 consecutive weeks as top-ranked WTA player, which is the joint-most with Steffi Graf.
Serena last won a Grand Slam title in 2017 at the Australian Open. With the US Open around the corner, Williams would have to give her blood and sweat to sign off her career on a high and memorable note.
