Hackers stole Mexico’s IT systems, president’s health report among data that were stolen

Data held by Mexico’s armed forces were recently hacked by threat actors. The hacked data was inclusive of information like the heart condition of the president. Mexico reported on Friday about the data theft.

According to reports, a group locally identified by the media as Guacamaya or macaw carried out the data theft.

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of Mexico gave his affirmation about the data theft. Local media aired the development on the night of when it first came to light.

The President affirmed that claims of a cyber-hack occurrence were true. He additionally noted that hackers had exploited a change in the IT systems of the military.

However,  he confirmed that no sensitive data was stolen.

According to reports, the stolen data amounted to 6 terabytes. It comprised of Lopez Obrador’s state of health and numerous security issues among other data.

Reports also claimed that tens of thousands of emails were also among the stolen data. These emails are dated from 2016 to September 2022.

The list goes on to include details of criminal figures, transcripts of communications, and the monitoring of the US ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar.

Other documents included details of an unsuccessful failed military operation to arrest the son of drug baron Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman in 2019.

Guacamaya is also known to have executed similar hacks in Latin American countries.
