India to launch its first hydrogen powered train this month; Said to arrive with 1200 horsepower

The Ministry of Railways is planning to soon introduce hydrogen-powered trains in India. In fiscal year 2023-24, the Ministry allocated Rs 2800 crore to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains. Well, it is now revealed that the first hydrogen-powered train will be launched this month in India.

Previously in January, U Subba Rao, General Manager, “Integral Coach Factory (ICF) said in a statement, We are working on the flagship project for the Hydrogen Fuel Cell train set. Hydrogen fuel cell coaches are currently being produced at ICF. The train set is likely to be turned out by 25 March.”

It is revealed contrary to other countries, India’s hydrogen train has achieved a milestone as it is equipped with an engine that has a capacity of 1200 horsepower. This capacity is said to be the highest in the world. As per a report by ETEnergyworld.com, the first hydrogen-powered train in India is allocated to Northern Railways Delhi Division and is likely to run on an 89-km long Jind-Sonipat section. Not only this, India’s first hydrogen train is also said to be among the longest and maximum powered hydrogen trains in the world.

If you remember, China was the first country in the world to develop a hydrogen-powered train in 2023. These hydrogen-powered trains will support zero carbon emission goals and will ensure a cleaner and greener future for the transportation sector.
