Mahindra has achieved its second ‘Safer Choice’ Award this time for the XUV 700
A few months after its release in 2021, the Mahindra XUV700 received a perfect 5-star rating in the Global NCAP crash tests. The same organisation has now tested it again, this time to meet pedestrian protection and electronic stability control (ESC) criteria.
The SUV also assisted the company in receiving it’s second ‘Safer Choice’ accolade from the safety organisation. To refresh your recollection, the XUV300 was not only the automobile that earned Mahindra this accolade for the first time, but it was also the first model to get this honour.
The SUV obtained a 5-star rating for adult occupant protection and a 4-star rating for child occupant protection. It received 16.03 points out of 17 for adult occupant protection and 41.66 points out of 49 for child occupant protection. Its bodyshell integrity was determined to be stable.’
Who Can Win This Award, and When Was It Created?
Only carmakers who achieve excellent levels of safety performance receive this accolade from Global NCAP. The organisation established the ‘Safer Choice’ award competition at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo.
Global NCAP has outlined five standards that a vehicle must meet in order to achieve this award for its manufacturer. They are as follows:
1) According to the most recent edition of the Global NCAP new market test protocol, a 5-star score in adult occupant safety for the car is required.
2) Based on the most recent version of the Global NCAP new market test protocol, it should receive a 4-star rating for child occupant protection.
3) The vehicle must feature electronic stability control (ESC) and meet the performance criteria of the United Nations (UN). Where optional, ESC must be offered on all types of the automobile, marketed individually without ‘bundling’ with other equipment, and must be a standard fit to at least 20% of the country’s sales volume by two years.
4) It must meet UN Regulations for pedestrian protection, which must be confirmed on market units at a Global NCAP authorised testing facility.
5) Compliance with all of these requirements must be validated at a Global NCAP accredited laboratory and, where required, by the issuance of type-approval certificates.
Mahindra’s Recent Participation In Global NCAP
Many of Mahindra’s latest SUVs (beginning with the XUV300) have performed well in Global NCAP crash tests. The XUV300 achieved a five-star certification for adult occupant protection and a four-star rating for child occupant protection, a first in India. The most recent models to receive four and five stars were the Thar and XUV700.
The Scorpio N, Mahindra’s future SUV, is expected to receive at least a four-star rating, as the carmaker has pledged that all of its newer models will receive at least a four-star rating in Global NCAP tests.
