Ola CEO Confirms Gen 3 Scooters Launch on January 31, 2025, via YouTube Event

Ola Electric has announced that its highly anticipated Gen 3 scooters will be launched on January 31, 2025. The company had initially planned to introduce the next-generation electric scooters by August 2025 but has now accelerated the timeline. Ola’s Founder and Managing Director, Bhavish Aggarwal, confirmed the launch in a recent post on X, stating:

“Bringing the ‘Next Level’ with @OlaElectric Gen 3 scooters!

We’ve significantly surpassed Gen 2 products in every way – much higher performance, more features, great design! And a surprise to change the industry all over again 😉

10:30 AM Fri 31st Jan.”

The launch event will be streamed live on YouTube.

Ola Gen 3 Platform: More Rigid and Efficient

Ola Electric has introduced a new ‘Inside the Box’ approach for its Gen 3 platform. The motor and battery pack will be integrated into a single unit, making the scooters more efficient and lighter. The battery pack will also play a structural role, improving stability and balance. Ola claims that this innovation will lead to a 26% increase in performance and a 22.5% reduction in costs compared to its current architecture.

Next-Gen Battery Technology

The Gen 3 scooters will feature in-house-developed lithium-ion batteries built at Ola’s Gigafactory in Tamil Nadu. The company has opted for 4680 cells, which are larger and more powerful than the previously used 2170 cells. This shift is expected to reduce manufacturing time while enhancing thermal efficiency and shock resistance.

Single ECU and Magnetless Motor

Ola Electric is also introducing a single Electronic Control Unit (ECU), replacing multiple moving components found in previous models. The new magnetless motor will incorporate magnetized electrical coils instead of permanent magnets, delivering higher torque and improved efficiency. The streamlined architecture will merge the Battery Management System with the Motor Control Unit, making the scooters more compact and efficient.

Additionally, Ola has developed a Central Commute Board, which will enable the company to integrate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in future models.

Boosting Local Manufacturing

To reduce production costs and keep prices competitive, Ola Electric is focusing on domestic sourcing of motor materials and battery components. This move is particularly crucial as government subsidies such as FAME 2 and EMPS have played a key role in keeping EV costs affordable. When these subsidies eventually phase out, reliance on in-house battery and motor production will help control prices and accelerate EV adoption in India.
