Tata intends to introduce India’s cheapest electric car, Tiago EV
Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, intends to introduce India’s cheapest electric cars, with a price tag of less than Rs 12.5 lakh. The company intends to launch an electric vehicle in a lower-priced segment than the Tigor EV. The Tata Motors Tigor EV has a starting price of Rs 12.5 lakh, so the next car is likely to be less expensive. When it is released, the new Tiago EV will be the smallest electric vehicle not only in Tata Motors’ lineup but in the entire nation. Other EV manufacturers, such as Hyundai and Kia, cost more than Rs 20 lakh. This would be the company’s third Tiago EV model, and one of ten models that the company has promised to release by 2026. The petrol version of the Tiago starts at Rs 5.4 lakh.
Tata Motors’ announcement of the Tiago EV launch coincides with World EV Day, which is celebrated on September 9. Tata Motors has captured 88% of the electric passenger vehicle market with just two models – Nexon EV and Tigor EV. Tata Motors sold 17,150 electric vehicles between April and August of this year. Through a significant increase in production capacity, the company hopes to sell 50,000 EVs this fiscal year.
Tata Motors European Technical Centre first displayed Tiago’s all-electric version in 2017. That model featured a liquid-cooled 85 kW motor with 20Nm of torque and a driving range of 100 kilometers on a single charge. With significant advancements in EV technology since then, the Tiago EV is expected to have improved specifications.
