Amazon India Plans Quick Commerce Entry with ‘Tez’, Eyes Late 2024 Launch
Amazon India is accelerating plans for its quick commerce service, codenamed ‘Tez’, with a target launch by late December or early 2024, moving ahead of its initial first quarter 2025 timeline. The venture will be Amazon’s first quick commerce initiative globally, entering India’s $5.5-6 billion quick delivery market where Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart currently operate.
The e-commerce company is preparing to focus on groceries and daily essentials, working on dark stores, SKU finalization, and logistics infrastructure for quick deliveries. The launch date is expected to be finalized during a December review meeting, ahead of Amazon’s annual Smbhav event scheduled for December 9-10.
Amazon has started recruiting for this project, with job postings from its India Grocery and Everyday Essentials team describing it as an “initiative for an upcoming and fast growing e-commerce space.”
The company’s entry comes as other players expand their quick commerce presence. Flipkart launched its Minutes service before the festive season, BigBasket reported gross sales of over ₹900 crore last month from its quick commerce operations, and Tata Digital introduced its Neu Flash service in October.
Morgan Stanley reports that quick commerce could exceed food delivery in gross order value by 2026. Market projections estimate growth between $25 billion and $55 billion by 2030. The sector has generated nearly $7 billion this year, with higher app download rates compared to traditional e-commerce platforms.
Amazon India will use its delivery network and logistics partnerships for the service. The company’s performance in this competitive market will depend on its execution and ability to gain market share.
