Apple is being sued by a Russian legal firm for $1.3 million after the corporation removed its payment service from the nation

According to Reuters, a Russian law firm has sued Apple for $1.26 million (90 million roubles) in damages after the corporation dropped its payment service from the nation.

According to Reuters, Moscow-based law firm Chernyshov, Lukoyanov and Partners filed a lawsuit against Apple on Friday, accusing the company of violating Russian consumers’ rights by restricting the use of its Apple Pay service.

In March, blaming the invasion of Ukraine, Apple ceased all product sales in Russia and froze some services, including Apple Pay. Following the invasion, many corporations, including McDonald’s, Goldman Sachs, and Uniqlo, withdrew from Russia.

According to Reuters, the law company filed the action in a Moscow court and is demanding compensation for damages including “moral injury.”

According to Reuters, the law firm said that limiting services reduced the value of Apple products, which it claimed was unfair and discriminatory under Russian law.

According to Reuters, the law firm is still soliciting claimants to join the lawsuit, which might increase the overall damages requested. According to Reuters, it also wants Apple to restart full service of its payment service in Russia.

In April, the same legal firm sued Netflix, which had previously suspended its operations in Russia.

Insider contacted Grigory Chernyshov, a partner at the firm, but did not receive a response right away.

Outside of normal business hours, Apple did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

After halting its services in March, Apple issued a statement saying it was “extremely disturbed” by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and “stands with all those who are suffering as a result of the violence.”
