Entire Indian TikTok workforce fired, is it planning to leave India

India banned TikTok and 30 other Chinese apps in July 2022 due to national security concerns. But the Indian workforce for TikTok kept working for the Dubai and Brazil markets. Recently the news has come out that TikTok fired the entire Indian workforce earlier this week. Sources aware of it have said this to ET on Thursday.

Almost 40 people were given pink slips and the company has promised to give six-seven months of severance pay said to the sources. Another source said to ET that Tik-Tok has informed its Indian workforce to look for other opportunities as 28 Feb would be their last day. Further, the source mentioned that the work won’t resume in India because of India’s stance towards Chinese apps. The employers were informed about this and most of the employees will be getting 90 days’ severance.

TikTok is looking to provide support to employees who will be laid off. India was once the biggest overseas market with 200 million users for Tik-Tok but the Indian government banned it on the basis of security concerns. Instagram took the advantage of it and launched a similar concept of the reel that became the source of massive growth for it, YouTube thereafter also launched a similar thing with the name of YouTube shorts.
