Exemption of tariffs on China for US import of electronics is temporary; Trump to announce new tariffs on semiconductors over the next week

US President Donald Trump has recently been a part of various headlines due to the introduction of new tariffs for various countries. Recently, 145% tariffs were imposed on Chinese goods, but products like smartphones, laptops, and a range of other electronic products were excluded from the reciprocal tariffs, which was seen as a relief.

But seems like the relief is only for a short-lived period, as Trump announced yesterday that the exemption of tariffs on China for the US import of electronics is temporary. As per US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, electronic products will be included in the Trump administration’s upcoming sector special tariffs. He mentioned, “Electronics products will be part of upcoming sectoral tariffs.”

There will be no exception for electronic goods; they will just be moving to a different sector- semiconductor category, and would be subject to special tariffs. It is said that these measures will encourage domestic production of such products.

Trump will be announcing new tariffs on semiconductors over the next week, though it is said that there would be flexibility for certain companies when it comes to semiconductor tariffs. It is said that the tariffs may raise the prices of Apple devices due to the company’s reliance on Chinese manufacturing. Other than semiconductor tariffs, pharmaceutical tariffs are also said to be announced in the next month or two.

In related news, China has also retaliated to these new imposed tariffs by raising tariffs on American goods to 125%.
