Oppo and Ericsson Sign Global 5G Patent Cross-License Agreement

Oppo and Ericsson have signed a multi-year global patent cross-license agreement that includes global patent cross-license, technical cooperation, market expansion, and other collaborations. The China-based company and Ericsson will also conduct business cooperation on projects related to 5G, including device testing, customer engagements, and marketing activities. As per the announcement, Oppo will be paying royalties to Ericsson for using the 5G tech in its devices, while the partner will be cooperating with Oppo on a number of projects related to 5G, including device testing, customer engagements, and marketing activities.

Christina Petersson, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, says: “This important royalty-bearing license agreement with OPPO allows Ericsson to further invest in fundamental communications technologies”.” The license confirms that the patent licensing industry works and is proof that a vast majority of license agreements are based on business negotiations. It also reflects the mutual respect’s patent portfolio. We now look forward to growing Ericsson’s IPR revenues with additional 5G agreements and expansion into additional licensing areas, such as IoT and consumer electronics.”

Oppo Chief Intellectual Property Officer Feng Ying said that they are pleased to have reached an agreement with Ericsson and the company ” has always respected intellectual property, advocated for reasonable fees, and supported the establishment of a long-term healthy IP ecosystem”. He also highlighted that the company aims to resolve IP disputes between licensors and licensees through friendly negotiation, with mutual respect for the value of patents. At the beginning of this year, we saw the Oppo dispute being settled with Nokia over 5G patent infringement. They entered into a cross-license agreement ending a long patent infringement dispute.
