Oppo urges Nokia to abide by the 5G royalty rates set by a Chinese court in a recent ruling

The ongoing legal saga between the widely famous smartphone brands- Nokia and Oppo has been going on for the last two years now and till now there have been a number of rulings regarding this legal matter in France, India, Australia, and the UK but the case has still not reached to a final conclusion.

Well if you don’t know what this legal saga is all about, let us give you a brief. All the controversy started when Nokia sued Oppo in regard to the Chinese smartphone maker using its Wi-Fi patents. This is because Oppo refused to pay compensation to Nokia for using its intellectual properties. The complaint was filed across Europe in which Oppo was accused of infringement of 4G/LTE and 5G SEP and an implementation patent relating to the generation of a power supply signal for a power amplifier.

Oppo has been pushed out of Germany by Nokia due to this reason only. Recently a ruling took place in Chongquin, China and in this particular ruling the court supported Oppo’s desire for lower fees on Nokia’s essential patents for mobile technologies ranging from 2G to 5G.

The Chinese court has also set 5G royalty rates for Nokia’s patents which are lower than Nokia’s standard charges and Oppo has now urged Nokia to accept these rates. On one side where it seems that Oppo wants to settle this dispute, it is said that Nokia will be appealing this decision as it is limited to Chinese jurisdiction only and also Nokia has also won over Oppo quite a few times outside China which somewhere seems to give them confidence to appeal this decision.
