Russia suspends exports until end-2022

The Russian government has banned exports of telecom, medical, auto, agricultural, electrical, and technology equipment, among other items, in retaliation for Western sanctions on Moscow until the end of 2022, it announced on Thursday.

The export suspension list included over 200 items in total, including railway cars, containers, turbines, and other goods.

Before Russia invaded Ukraine, carmaker Stellantis, which manufactures and sells the Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Jeep, and Fiat brands in Russia, planned to begin exporting locally manufactured light commercial vehicles to Western Europe.

The ban, which will last until the end of 2022, will affect, among other things, telecommunications, medical, agricultural, electrical, and technology equipment.

It comes in the wake of harsh Western sanctions imposed on Russia’s financial and energy systems in response to its war in Ukraine.

Asset freezes and travel bans have also been imposed on a growing number of Russian oligarchs.

Cars, railway carriages, containers, and turbines are among the other items prohibited from export from Russia.

According to the most recent figures, Russia is the UK’s 19th largest trading partner, with £15.9 billion in trade between the two countries.
