Tata Seals Deal With Pegatron For iPhone Plant In Tamil Nadu; Tata’s Third iPhone Factory In India
In a recent development, Tata Electronics has acquired a majority stake in Taiwanese contract manufacturer Pegatron’s only iPhone plant in India. Reports reveal that this deal has been announced internally and as per the deal, Tata will hold a 60% stake and take charge of daily operations while Pegatron holds the remaining 40%, providing technical support.
This deal is said to strengthen Apple’s broader strategy of diversifying its supply chain beyond China. Now partnering with Tata, Apple seems to cement its footprint in the Indian market. Pegatron’s iPhone plant located in Chennai, employs around 10,000 workers and produces five million iPhones annually.
Tata’s other iPhone manufacturing sites in India are located in Karnataka and Hosur (Tamil Nadu) and now this new iPhone plant will become Tata’s third iPhone manufacturing site in India. This joint venture between Tata and Pegatron represents a major milestone for India’s ambitions to become a global hub for electronics manufacturing. At the same time, it also suggests that India is set to play a crucial role in Apple’s future supply chain strategies. Reportedly India is said to contribute 20-25% of total iPhone shipments this year from 12-14% last year.
