Tesla representatives to meet Piyush Goyal, India commerce minister, to discuss setup of a factory in India for a new $24,000 EV for India
We recently informed you that Tesla, the giant electric vehicle manufacturing brand is drawing plans to set up a factory in India to produce a new $24,000 car. The particular vehicle is meant for the Indian market, which would amount to almost about 20 lakh rupees. A report by Reuters now states that a meeting with India’s commerce minister, Piyush Goyal, would be soon carried out by Tesla representatives regarding the same.
Last year, Tesla tried to reduce import taxes applicable on EVs shipped to India. However, the Indian Government rather suggested the company manufacture cars locally for the nation.
Prior to the present developments, in the month of June, Elon Musk met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed his interest in investing in India. Talks about Tesla setting up a factory with an annual EV production capacity of 5,00,000 units were also carried out. You can check our earlier report regarding the same here.
The upcoming meeting between Tesla and the Indian commerce minister is a meeting of the highest degree and is supposed to see discussions regarding an EV supply chain and land allotment for the factory.
Tesla’s entry into the Indian market and to manufacture EVs locally has seen rows of discussions since 2022. From facing restrictions by the Indian Government to Musk deciding not to set up a manufacturing unit in India, we are now looking forward to a possible establishment to emerge out of everything.
