Ukraine demands an urgent meeting with Russia
Ukraine has called for an urgent, meeting with Russia within 48 hours. The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv has demanded an urgent meeting with Russia on Monday, February 14 regarding the increasing military advancements of Russia near the border.
On Monday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has arrived at Kyiv for presiding over a meeting with Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelenskiy. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told that NATO should guarantee Moscow that Ukraine would never be accepted as a member of NATO. However, the demands have been rejected. Olaf Scholz had said that in case of a Russian attack, tough sanctions would be imposed immediately.
Also, Belarus had discussed the issues with Ukraine. It assured each other that no threats would be posed to one other. It is considered a positive step towards cooperation between the allies. Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Andriy Zagorodniuk calls it ‘positive’. He stated, “We discussed our agenda and determined our future steps. I view this as a positive signal and the first step towards a fruitful cooperation.”
Amid Ukraine’s fear, it believes that Russia is invading Ukraine because of joint military exercises with Belarus and other neighbours.
Earlier on Friday, February 11, Kyiv had requested Russia to explain its military activities near Ukraine-Russia’s border through the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. However, no response was made from Russia’s side. Kyiv has again demanded an urgent meeting with Russia within 48 hours.
