Delhi woman sexually harassed at a metro station, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) says an investigation is ongoing
A lady recently took to Twitter to describe how she was sexually harassed by a man at a Delhi Metro station on the yellow line, but received no assistance from station security.
The woman said in a series of tweets that after she got off the Jor Bagh metro station on Thursday afternoon, a man asked her under the guise of checking her address.
“I normally don’t post on tweet, but the traumatizing incident that I faced today at the Delhi Metro deserves the attention. This is going to be a long thread so please bear with me. While travelling on the yellow line today, I faced sexual harassment at the Jor Bagh Station,” wrote the woman.
“The man had asked for my help with an address during the metro ride. I helped him, then got off at my station and sat on the platform to book a cab. The man approached me again at the station under the garb of confirming the address,” she added.
While attempting to show her an address in a file, the man allegedly displayed his genitals.
She jumped up and bolted as soon as she realized what had happened because she was terrified and couldn’t think. When she contacted a police officer on the platform, he absolutely refused to assist her and told her to go upstairs to discuss it. She was still terrified, but she managed to get upstairs and get more cops. She said that she begged them to take her to the CCTV room so that she could recognize him.
Folks observed him get onto a separate metro and leave after the entire thing was captured on camera.
The woman claimed that when she requested assistance from the authorities, they instead chastised her for causing a commotion.
“I asked them to do something about it but instead they started blaming me and said that I should have created a scene and that there’s nothing they can do now since he managed to leave,” she wrote.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has responded by stating that an investigation into the situation is underway.
“The DMRC, as an organization has zero-tolerance for any act amounting to indecent behavior and sexual harassment. We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for the traveling public at all times,” DMRC said in a statement.
“In the context of the recent incident reported at Jorbagh, we have already taken up the issue with the concerned security agencies. Delhi Police has already taken cognizance of the complaint and are investigating into the matter,” it added.
It further stated that the incident’s CCTV footage had previously been provided with police authorities, who are aggressively pursuing the issue.
