Houston Music festival: Death of at least 8 people after crowd surge cause ‘Panic’ – report
Astroworld Music festival was going well in the southern US state of Texas with Rapper Travis Scott performing on Friday night when a shocking incident occurred which led to the death of eight people and several others got injured.
Houston fire chief Samuel Pena explaining the incident said that the “crowd began to compress towards the front of the stage”. He added, “That caused some panic and it started causing some injuries, people began to fall out, become unconscious and it created additional panic.”
He said that the reason for deaths cannot be confirmed until the medical reports get out and said, “We had at least eight confirmed fatalities tonight and scores of individuals that were injured. We transported 17 patients to the hospital… 11 of those that were transported were in cardiac arrest.”
Astroworld Music festival was launched in 2018 by Scott. Travis Scott is an American rapper having six Grammy nominations. There were about 50,000 people present at the event and Scott was performing until he saw fans in distress among fans near stage and stopped performing. There were around 300 people injured including those with minor scrapes or bruises.
Houston police investigated in the matter to know the reason for the incident, they talked with organizers and looked into footages. Police chief Larry J Satterwhite said, “Over the course of just a few minutes, suddenly we had several people down on the ground experience some type of cardiac arrest.”
Authorities declared that the festival has been cancelled and will not be conducted on Saturday night.
