An official said on Friday that at least ten people were killed and nine others were seriously injured in a massive explosion that occurred inside a house where the residents were said to be involved in illegal firecracker business. According to Bhagalpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen, the blast occurred in the early hours of the morning inside the house of Mahendra Mandal in the town’s Kajbalichak neighbourhood.
The impact of the explosion, the sound of which was heard far and wide, reduced Mandal’s house and two adjoining buildings to rubble, according to the DM, who added that earth moving equipment was brought in to clear the debris.
He said teams of bomb disposal experts and forensic experts were collecting samples to determine the type of material that caused the explosion.
The ten bodies recovered so far had been severely disfigured, and the administration had yet to confirm the identities of those who had died. Sen stated that nine survivors had been rushed to a hospital.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences for the loss of life in Bhagalpur and spoke with Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar about relief and rescue efforts. Mandal was previously involved in the illegal manufacture of firecrackers, according to the DM, and a similar explosion at his house in 2008 killed three people, including his wife.
