Caste-related question at Periyar University sparks controversy; VC orders investigation
Tamil Nadu: After a caste-related question was asked in the first-year test that was held on July 14, Thursday, a question paper at the Periyar University in Tamil Nadu has sparked controversy.
However, Vice Chancellor Jagannathan assured a probe into the situation.
The question that was caste-related- “Which one is the Lower Caste which belongs to Tamil Nadu” with four caste options- was asked to the first-year (second semester) Master in History students who were taking their exam in the subject ‘Freedom Movement of Tamil Nadu: From 1800 to 1947’.
The vice chancellor addressed the matter and said that another university had created the question and that he had not received any information regarding the paper.
“The Periyar University does not create the exam questions. The question paper was created by additional college and university professors. We often don’t view the question paper before the exam to prevent a question paper leak. I received no information about the contentious question. We’ll look at this,” VC stated.
“Today’s question was set by the examination controller, and we are requesting a report from him. No re-examination is being considered, ” he added.
