Sports Ministry suspends WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar after protest by wrestlers!
As per the Press Trust of India (PTI) , the Union Sports Ministry has finally suspended Vinod Tomar from the post of the Assistant Secretary of the Wrestling Federation of India. This news came in a day after the President of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan was asked to step aside from his post.
There was a row of allegations by wrestlers made against Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan. These allegations included serious ones such as those of sexual harassment. Wrestlers also spoke about the issues such as financial impropriety caused by the WFI President.
However, Vinod Tomar went on to defend him and called the allegations ‘baseless’. He also added that the wrestlers sat in protest without evidence. He added that Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan was distancing himself from this matter due to the ongoing probe.
Tomar was suspended as the Union Sports Ministry found that his present would be detrimental to the discipline. His suspension is effective immediately as his presence is harmful. This is applicable as per the provisions of the Sports Code 2011 Annexure IX. He was appointed as the Assistant Secretary of the WFI in 2002 and has been suspended in 2023.
Amidst this, Tomar’s statement surfaced. Vinod Tomar mentioned that he did not receive any order about the same.
An oversight committee is also being formed in the meanwhile. This committee will have the highest authority in such matters in the sport of wrestling. The open championship that was about to begin in Gonda in Uttar Pradesh soon has been cancelled by the Government.
