On March 23, 1931, three of India’s most influential and popular revolutionaries were executed. As we remember Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru on their 84th martyrdom anniversary on Monday, here is a photograph of Bhagat Singh’s death warrant, signed by the president of the tribunal and issued to the superintendent of the Central Jail of Lahore.

The nationalist was sentenced to death after being found guilty of offences under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 121, 302, and 4 (b) of the Explosive Substances Act.
The warrant was issued in connection with the April 8, 1929, gas-bomb attack inside New Delhi’s Central Assembly Hall. In reference to the event, Bhagat Singh stated, “A loud noise (like a bomb) is required to make the deaf hear.”
Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were also tried and sentenced to death for shooting and killing British Superintendent of Police Saunders on December 17, 1928.
Following a hurried trial in the Lahore Conspiracy Case, they were executed by the British at 7.15 p.m. on March 23, 1931, in the Central Jail in Lahore.
