Is India Sending troops to Sri Lanka? Here is what Indian Ministry of External Affairs has to say
The Indian High Commission has reportedly denied the speculation of media and social media about New Delhi sending Indian troops to Colombo. High Commission of India to Colombo tweeted on their social media account dismissing all such claims saying, “The High Commission would like to categorically deny speculative reports in sections of media and social media about India sending her troops to Sri Lanka. These reports and such views are also not in keeping with the position of the Government of India. (1/2).”

Such speculations surfaced on the internet from a rumor claiming the former PM of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa has fled with his family to India. According to several reports on July 4th since Mr. Rajapaksa’s resignation he has been seen to flee the country leaving his office-cum-official residence behind. The incident took place due to pro-Rajapaksa supporters attacking anti-government protesters amid a severe economic crisis in the nation. A group of protesters allegedly saw Mr. Rajapaksa taking refuge at the Naval Base in the eastern port district of Trincomalee.
The protesters have also been calling for the resignation of Mr. Rajapaksa’s brother and Sri Lanka’s President Gptabaya Rajapaksa. At least 8 people allegedly died and more than 250 people were injured in the attack between pro-Rajapaksa supporters and protesters.
Sri Lanka is currently facing the worst economic crisis since its independence from Britain in 1948. The High Commission of India has been “full supportive” of Sri Lanka’s democracy. The spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated clearly that India stands with the people of Sri Lanka through democratic means and values.
However, India has also rejected all claims of sending troops to Sri Lanka. Although the largest democratic nation has kept her faith in the people of Sri Lanka.
