List of Presidents of Ukraine since 1991
Here is the list of Ukraine’s presidents from 1991 to 2022. The modern Ukrainian presidency was formed when Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic passed a law on 5th July 1991 establishing the soviet Socialist Republic.
1. Leonid Kravchuk
Term of office: 24th August 1991- 5 December 1991, 5 December 1991- 19 July 1994
Political Party: Independent
Leonid Kravchuk is a former Ukrainian Politician and the first president of Ukraine. He is also the former chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and People’s Deputy of Ukraine serving in the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine(United Faction). After a crisis between the president and the prime minister, Kravchuk resigned from the presidency. Though he resigned from the presidency, he was active in politics and served as the leader of the Social Democratic Party from 2002 to 2006.
2.Leonid Danylovych Kuchma
Term of office: 19 July 1994- 23 January 2005
Political Party: Independent
Leonid Kuchma was the second president of Ukraine. He began his political career in 1990 at first served as a prime minister between October 11992 and September 1993. He took office in the re-election in 1994 against his rival Leonid Kravchuk. He was again elected for five years from 199-2005. During 200-2001, his power weakens because of his corruption and scandals.
3. Viktor Andriovych Yushchenko
Term of office: 23 January 2005- 25 February 2010
Political Party: Our Ukraine
Yuschenko was the third president of Ukraine and began his political career in 1993 wh he worked in the National Bank of Ukraine. He had a repeat run-off with Viktor Yanukovych because it was widespread that the electoral fraud was in favour of Yanukovych but Yuschenko won in the re-vote. The assassination attempt in late 2004, was made at Yushchenko by injecting a hazardous amount of TCDD as a result of it he was disfigured. In 2010, he lost the election and also failed to win Parliamentary representation.
4. i) Viktor Yanukovych
Term of office: 25 February 2010- 22 February 2014
Political party: Party of Regions(2003-2010), Independent(2010-present)
Yanukovych was elected as the fourth president of Ukraine in 2010. But this success was short-lived as he was ousted as a president because of a series of mistakes done by him. At first, Yanukovych rejected a pending EU association agreement to pursue a Russian loan bailout and closer ties with Russia. This led to civil war between Protestors and Police. Then after discussions, Yanukovych left the capital for Kharkiv saying his car was shot as he left Kyiv then travelled to Crimea eventually to exile in Southern Russia. On 18th June 2015, Yanukovych was officially deprived of the title of president by the Parliament.
ii) Oleksandr Turchynov(acting)
Term of office: 23 February 2014- 7 June 2014
Political Party: Fatherland
Turchynov was the former acting president of Ukraine after Yanukovych was removed from the power of president on 21 February 2014 until Petro Poroshenko took the office on June 7, 2014. Turchynov was the first deputy chairman of the Political party Batkivshchyna and He started the New political party people’s front in September 2014.
5. Petro Poroshenko
Term of office: 7 June 2014- 20 May 2019
Political Party: Petro Poroshenko Bloc
Poroshenko was served as the fifth president of Ukraine. During his presidency, he led the first phase of the Russo-Ukraine war and began the process of integration with the European Union by signing the Association Agreement. He also promoted the Ukrainian language, nationalism, inclusive capitalism, decommunization and administrative decentralization. He also helped in creating an orthodox church for Ukraine. But In 2019, he lost against Volodymyr Zelensky.
6. Volodymyr Zelensky
Term of office: 20 May 2019- Incumbent
Political Party: Servant of the people
Zelensky grew up as a Native Russian speaker, Before his Political career, He studied law but pursued acting and comedy as a career. In 2019, he won a presidential election over incumbent Petro Poroshenko. In 2012, he and Kavartal 95 had a joint production with Ukrainian Network 1+1. Now, he has became the People’s President by fighting against Russian invasion.
