Navjot Sidhu Takes Back Resignation, But will visit congress headquarters as not happy with current chief minister Channi
Navjot Singh Sidhu announced today that he has rescinded his resignation as Punjab Congress chief and has issued a new ultimatum to his party. “When a new Advocate General is appointed,” he stated, he will return to his office.
That could be difficult, considering that Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is said to have rejected APS Deol’s resignation as Advocate General of Punjab, which Mr. Sidhu wants to be deleted.
“I have rescinded my resignation,” Mr. Sidhu told reporters, officially confirming what had been rumored for three weeks following his meeting with Rahul Gandhi.
“When a new Advocate General is appointed, I will go to the party office and assume command,” he said.
Mr. Deol resigned on Monday, following persistent attacks from Mr. Sidhu, who wants him out for representing two accused officers in a sacrilege and police shooting case in 2015.
The state government has yet to say if the resignation was accepted or not. Mr. Channi, according to sources, has refused to accept it, infuriating Mr. Sidhu even more.
Former police chief Sumedh Saini, one of the accused in the case involving the mutilation of the Sikh religious book Guru Granth Sahib and police shooting on demonstrators, was represented by Mr. Deol.
Apart from the Advocate General, Mr. Sidhu has been advocating for the dismissal of Punjab Police Chief IPS Sahota. Mr. Sahota led a Special Investigation Team set up by the then-Akali administration in 2015 to look into the sacrilege occurrences.
Mr. Sidhu fumed, “How can a lawyer who got Sumedh Saini bail be Advocate General and a person like IPS Sahota be the DGP?”
“I’ve been bringing these issues up with the incoming Chief Minister. Who was the first to bring the topic of drugs and sacrilege to light? Rahul Gandhi, our president, was the one who said that. We must find a solution to these problems “The cricketer-turned-politician appeared to nudge his party’s leadership with his words.
Following months of squabbles with Mr. Sidhu, Amarinder Singh was compelled to resign in September. His departure, however, did not put an end to infighting within the Punjab Congress.
With the Punjab election only a few weeks away, Mr. Sidhu has not shied away from criticizing his own government and Mr. Channi on a variety of issues.
