Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to offer resignation at Congress meet tomorrow

Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul Gandhi, and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who led the party’s campaign in Uttar Pradesh, are expected to resign tomorrow at a meeting of the party’s top decision-making body, the Congress Working Committee or CWC, taking moral responsibility for the party’s poor performance in the recently held assembly elections.

It remains to be seen what the CWC members, who are mostly loyalists, decide. This is not the first time Ms Gandhi and her son have offered to resign.

They have usually rejected the offer and reaffirmed their support for the Gandhis, but this time, despite the fact that 56 members, ranging from permanent to special invitees, have been summoned, some CWC members are expected to seek changes, according to sources.

The Gandhis are also aware that the situation is not the same, and as one dissenter pointed out, their offer would assist the party in getting rid of its baggage.

They did, however, add that much would depend on how Sonia Gandhi’s opening remarks played out. Rahul Gandhi resigned as Congress President in 2019 following the party’s poor performance. Since then, the grand old party has been unable to find a permanent replacement, with Sonia Gandhi serving as interim president.

The Congress’s poor showing on the campaign trail continued on Thursday, when the party received a humiliating 0/5 score in the state election results. It lost Punjab, one of the last major states it controlled, to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and failed to mount a strong challenge in three other states where it had hoped to make a comeback: Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur.
