Nupur Sharma, the national spokesman for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a member of the party’s Delhi unit, has received repeated death threats via Twitter. After Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair uploaded her video with a warped commentary to incite trolls to attack her, she received numerous threats, with some even demanding for her execution.
Sharing the threats, Nupur tweeted, “@DelhiPolice@CPDelhi I am getting continuous death and beheading threats against my family and myself which are egged on by @zoo_bear because of his attempts to incite communal passions and vitiate the atmosphere by building a fake narrative. Attaching a few pics. Please note.”
Nupur’s tweets contain explicit threats to her life. Despite the fact that she has only published four tweets, there have been a slew of identical tweets sent at her since Zubair’s dog-whistling encouragement of her attacks.
Nupur Sharma remarked during a Times Now debate over the disputed Gyanvapi construction that if people are criticizing the Hindu faith, they may equally mock other religions, referencing to Islamic beliefs. Taking the video out of context, Zubair posted it with his 464,000 Twitter followers, describing Nupur as a fanatical communal hatemonger capable of inciting violence.
Troll accounts poured onto Nupur Sharma’s timeline with all kinds of threats, including threats to behead her, proving that the dog-whistling worked brilliantly. With incidents like Kamlesh Tiwari and Kishan Bharwad on the rise, the police should take these threats seriously.
After being tagged several times, Delhi Police eventually reacted, stating that the matter had been passed to the appropriate officials and that they would contact the aggrieved party, Nupur Sharma, as soon as possible.
This isn’t the first time that Alt News founders’ dog-whistling has led to death threats. After already being doxxed by other Alt News co-founder Pratik Sinha, a juvenile kid was bullied and intimidated. Zubair was interrogated by Delhi Police earlier this month for doxxing a juvenile girl.
