After receiving a message from Novak Djokovic, a Ukrainian tennis player takes up weapons in Kyiv

In the midst of Russia’s invasion, a Ukrainian tennis player has taken up arms in his hometown.

Sergiy Stakhovsky, a Ukrainian tennis player, has confessed that he has taken up arms after returning to his hometown in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion. Stakhovsky, who notably defeated Roger Federer at Wimbledon in 2013, announced his retirement from tennis after competing at the Australian Open in January.

Russia’s heinous assault on their neighbouring country is in its second week, after President Vladimir Putin’s lethal decision to break European peace last month.

Thousands of Ukrainians have already died, and the humanitarian catastrophe is worsening by the day as food, water, heat, and medication become scarce.

An estimated 1.7 million Ukrainians have fled the country while key towns and regions such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Mariupol remain under attack.

And, in an interview with GB News host Mark Dolan, Stakhovsky stated that he had little choice but to assist his countrymen.

“We have four to seven times a day airstrike alarms so we need to go down,” Stakhovsky said. “Some of those alarms we ignore, even though we shouldn’t.

“I do have a weapon – I’ll stand my ground by any means necessary.

“I still have family here as well. My brother and my father are with my grandmother who couldn’t leave, so I came to see them as well.

“There is no right choice in my situation. If I stayed home I would feel guilt because I left my father and my brother behind.”
