BCCI mourns for Lata Mangeshkar death: Indian players to wear black band during ODI against West Indies

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) announced on Sunday that the Indian cricket team will wear a black band during the first ODI match against the West Indies on Sunday (February 6).

“Our players will wear black bands in honor of Lata Mangeshkar at today’s match between India and West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The National Flag will fly at half mast,” informed BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla.

The match is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm IST at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. On February 9 and February 11, India will play two One Day Internationals against the touring West Indies at the same venue.

Lata Mangeshkar had a passion for the game. Sachin Tendulkar was a close friend of hers, and she maintained good relations with other cricketers. In 1983, after India won the World Cup, she agreed to perform a free concert for the winning team. She recalls, “I watched the final at Lord’s. I couldn’t believe we beat the two-time champion West Indies. Naturally, I felt very proud as an Indian. I was invited to dinner by Kapil Dev with the Indian team after winning the trophy. While there, I congratulated the team. The concert lasted four hours.”

BCCI paid tribute to the legendary singer earlier in the day. A BCCI tweet said, “The BCCI mourns the loss of Bharat Ratna Smt. Lata Mangeshkar ji. The queen of melody enthralled the country for decades. An avid follower of the game and an ardent supporter of Team India, she helped create an awareness using music as a medium.”

The legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Sunday, February 6. The legendary singer tested positive for Covid-19. At the age of 92, she died at the hospital.

Lata Mangeshkar was being treated at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She had pneumonia. She showed some improvement in her health, but was again shifted to a ventilator and an ICU as her condition worsened. She died on Sunday morning.an
