BCCI respects Kohli’s decision, as it is his own: Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly praised Virat Kohli’s efforts in all forms of cricket during his tenure as India captain, but said it was his personal decision to leave the position. Kohli was India’s most successful Test captain for seven years, but lost a 1-2 series to South Africa on Saturday.
As a result of Kohli’s leadership, India won 40 out of 68 Tests, including memorable series victories in England and Australia.
“Under Virat’s leadership Indian cricket has made rapid strides in all formats of the game ..his decision is a personal one and bcci respects it immensely ..he will be an important member to take this team to newer heights in the future. A great player. well done .. @BCCI @imVkohli,” Ganguly tweets.
Kohli, who was named Test captain when Dhoni resigned in the middle of a series against Australia back in 2014, made his announcement amid tense relations with the BCCI, which removed him as ODI captain after the star batter voluntarily resigned as T20 captain.
Kohli’s claims that he was not asked to stay back as T20 captain sparked a huge controversy when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and chief selector contradicted them.
Kohli is India’s most successful Test captain, followed by MS Dhoni with 27 victories in 60 games and Ganguly with 21 victories.
Additionally, Kohli ranks fourth on the list of most victories as a Test captain, behind South Africa’s Graeme Smith (53) and Australia’s Ricky Ponting (48) and Steve Waugh (41).
