Ben Stokes name ahead of England’s white ball captaincy
After a long journey of being the English captain, Joe Root has stepped down from his duties as a skipper. However, Root’s performance as a player has been quite exceptional as he has smashed back to back tons in recent matches. Although we have seen that players who have been given the role of leading the team has not gone well with their match performances.
A hunt for a ne England Test captain is on the way and it seems like the current vice captain of test, Ben Stokes will be filling up the shoes of Joe Root. Former England skipper Michael Vaughan has said, “I don’t see anyone else who could take the position and be guaranteed of their place in the side,”. “In Ben Stokes you have clearly got someone who has got a smart cricket brain, he’s going to give it everything, he is certainly going to have the respect of the players around him.”
Ben Stokes also has some captaincy experience as well, the English all rounder guided his side to 3 – 0 ODI series win against Pakistan last year. Stokes had taken off from the game to focus on his mental health and also spend time with his family, however, he returned to the squad for the Ashes.
Although, the BBC cricket correspondent, Jonathan Agnew said he has had concerns of Stokes leading the side. “Someone like Ben Stokes could be one if he is fit enough, but I do not know if it is good for Stokes or for English cricket if he was saddled with the captaincy.
Joe Root has captained England in 64 tests, winning 27, losing 26 and resulting in 11 draws, he has a win percentage of 42.
